Bonfire Memorial

Since 1909, the students at Texas A&M University have constructed a bonfire before the big football game against the University of Texas. Ninety years later, in 1999, the bonfire collapsed and killed 12 students while injuring 27. Located just a few miles from the Manor Inn College Station, the Bonfire Memorial pays tribute to those who lost their lives. You can take a tour of the Memorial, which is divided into three sections: Tradition Plaza, History Walk, and Spirit Walk.

  • How do I set up a tour?

Memorial Student Center (MSC) Hospitality, the Bonfire Memorial official tour guides, makes it very easy to set up a tour.  In fact, it will only take a few minutes. All you need to do is fill out a tour request form at http://hospitality.tamu.edu/TourRequestForm.pdf. Tours are available any time during the fall and spring semesters when classes are in session.
  • What will I see at the Bonfire Memorial?

The first thing you will see is the wall at Tradition Plaza, where you enter. It’s engraved with a poem, “The Last Corps Trip,” which is read before the lighting of the bonfire each year. You will also see 89 granite blocks along the History Walk that symbolize the bonfires that were set from 1909 to 1989. And there are the 12 portals, one for each student who died, that provide access to the Spirit Ring.
